Many of our readers are surprised by the sheer number of radio stations in the country, which is now at 13,525 and growing. Broken down, that is an average of 265 radio stations per state and the District of Columbia.
While California has more stations than any other state at 889, Delaware just beats out Rhode Island with the least at 33, versus Rhode Island’s 37. Washington, D.C. houses just 14 stations, but with stations in surrounding Maryland and Virginia, there are about 35 stations in the metropolitan area.
